After searching for almost 4 years for baby clothing I decided it was time to do it myself. I couldn't find what I wanted, nothing met my standards. It seemed simple enough to me but my search yielded little.
I was looking for the following:
- Organic. But not just any Organic....
- American made Organic ... but then I wanted to take it further... I wanted the fabric to be made in America.
- American Milled ... but what about the cotton plant itself?
- American Grown ... the cotton is not only milled into fabric but the cotton plant itself is grown in America as well and it is ORGANICALLY grown as well.
- Clothing itself handmade in America. That's where my handiwork comes in. I make the clothing on my amazing, high quality, industrial machines.
So that's what I did. I sourced designer Alabama Chanin PURE AMERICAN GROWN AND MILLED ORGANIC cotton jersey. It's PURE cotton. Not blended with anything. It is soft and continues to get softer with each wash.
The machines I use are industrial grade, not home grade machines like most people use. They are what factories use. High quality stitches, every time. The serger is a 5 thread serge which provides a three thread serge on the raw edges and does a chain safety stitch where you need it most, right where all the pressure hits the clothing. Chain stitch is stronger than a serge stitch. No more splitting seams.
You won't find a zigzag stitch holding the clothing hems and waists together either. Those pop way to easy. I use an industrial coverstitch machine which provides secure hems and waists with good stretch and professional appearance. Not the homemade appearance.
I am so passionate about sewing and QUALITY! What's the point of going through all the effort to find organic clothing to have it just break down quickly, to have seams or hems pop? I love high quality everything and I like to buy things that will hold up, last and even be able to pass down to others whether that is friends, neighbors, goodwill or for heirloom reasons 30 years later to my future grand babies. Make it count.
Now, I also do make clothing using NON organic materials but I do try to keep it as natural as possible for the "non organic" shoppers. Fun patterns are hard to pass up and some are more into "cute" than "organic". So I make a few things in just nice, high quality fabrics. They are sewn using the same high quality industrial machines so they will hold up through your adventures.
I love working with organic the most but its closely followed with natural fiber fabrics as well such as cottons, hemp, linen and pure silk.
All of this excitement runs out of my house where I work, by myself with some chocolate and good music.
